International Day of the Girl 2024: What SEGA Girls Love Most About Attending a Girls' School
On International Day of the Girl, we honor young girls' strength, resilience, and boundless potential worldwide. To mark this special day, some Form 3 students from SEGA, pictured to the right, shared their experiences attending an all-girls school. Their insights reveal the profound impact of such an environment, one that cultivates confidence, leadership, and personal development at every turn.
Aliceana: Focus on Girls' Issues and Shared Support For Aliceana, attending SEGA means engaging with issues specific to girls, helping her better understand her life and experiences. "The feelings of discouragement and inferiority among girls are lower for me," she says, acknowledging how being surrounded by girls allows them to lift each other. "We encourage each other on daily challenges that only girls face rather than if we were in a mixed school with boys." Aliceana believes this focus and support enable her and her classmates to be more productive and focused on their studies.
Furaha: Confidence and Leadership Furaha has found her voice at SEGA, where she feels empowered to speak up and share her thoughts. "I know what I say will be heard by my fellow students," she says. This confidence has encouraged her to dream big and strive for success. Beyond academics, SEGA has inspired Furaha to step into leadership roles. "I am encouraged to stand up as a leader and lead other girls away from gender discrimination and traditional issues affecting us." SEGA nurtures her aspirations, fostering the skills she needs to become a change-maker for her community.
Saida: Independence and Opportunity For Saida, SEGA is a place that nurtures independence. "I enjoy attending a girls' school because it has helped me be independent," she explains. Saida feels respected in society because of the education she receives at SEGA, and the opportunities available to her have opened doors she never imagined. "I can solve my challenges with the skills I get from being a student and deal with future challenges." Saida sees SEGA as not just a school but a place preparing her for life's next steps with confidence and capability.
Sarah: Comfort and Confidence in the Classroom Sarah’s experience at SEGA has helped her feel more comfortable speaking up in class—something she feels might not be as easy in a co-ed setting. "I can confidently speak and answer questions in the class," she says, knowing the supportive environment helps her grow academically. SEGA also provides a level of comfort during sensitive times, such as menstruation, where she feels at ease without the presence of boys, adding to the safe space that the school creates for all its students.
Emmy: Fewer Distractions, More Focus For Emmy, SEGA is a place where she can focus entirely on her education without the distractions she might encounter in a mixed school. "This school has helped me to increase my confidence when learning together and discussing ideas," she says. The supportive atmosphere allows her to concentrate on her studies and get the help she needs when necessary. SEGA has empowered Emmy to push past traditional limitations, enabling her to focus on her academic and personal goals.
As we celebrate International Day of the Girl, the voices of the students from SEGA Girls' School remind us of the transformative power of education in shaping young women's futures. Their experiences highlight the importance of creating environments where girls can grow, learn, and lead without limitations. By investing in girls' education and fostering spaces that encourage confidence, leadership, and resilience, we are not just shaping individual lives—we are building stronger communities and a more equitable world. Let these stories inspire us to continue advocating for the rights and opportunities every girl deserves.
