SEGA is the Solution: Janeth’s Story

2023 marks the 15th Anniversary of Nurturing Minds and SEGA! One of the ways we are celebrating this important milestone is through a monthly blog series titled “SEGA is the Solution”.

Young girls are most heavily impacted by lack of education, poverty and climate change. A striking body of evidence demonstrates that organizations like Nurturing Minds and SEGA are the solution to break the cycle of poverty, create prosperity and combat climate change. Each month we will be spotlighting one of SEGA’s graduates so you can see the impact that SEGA’s holistic approach to education has had on their lives.

Janeth, SEGA
Class of 2016

“SEGA opened my mind and made me think beyond what I see, understand my values, and believe in myself.”

If it wasn’t for SEGA, would you be where you are right now?

I am very grateful for SEGA and its supporters because it's why I'm here today. They have supported me with everything I needed to accomplish my education. SEGA changed my life from zero to hero.

After graduting from SEGA, Janeth enrolled in A-levels at Mwika High School and graduated in 2019. With continued support from SEGA's Continuing Education Scholarship Program, Janeth enrolled in Saint Augustine University where she is currently studying for her Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and will graduate in December of this year.

What is your education and employment status?

I'm in my final year of my bachelor's degree in law. After I graudate, I hope to attend law school at the University of Dar es Salaam and become a lawyer. Apart from my studies, I have a small business where I manufacture and sell liquid soap to my fellow students and other community members. This business helps me greatly since I earn money and gain business experience. It’s even something nice to do in my free time!

How did you decide to pursue a degree in law? Where did that dream come from?

I started thinking about law school during my A-level education due to some family matters, and it was one of my favorite professions. I thought I could be more helpful if I learned “the game's rules.” I selected Saint Augustine University Because it's the best university to study law. For instance, half of the University of Dar es Salaam's Law School graduates are from Saint Augustine University this year.

How was life before SEGA and how is life now?

Before SEGA, I lived in the shade; I had no dreams and very little knowledge. Thanks to my beloved late father for his love and support because he brought me to SEGA to study. SEGA opened my mind and made me think beyond what I see, understand my values, and believe in myself. My education was so good that I was the best student everywhere I went after SEGA because of what I learned from my teachers.

Now, I am a strong woman, educated, and with good values. I dream of having more than I do today to give back to my community, using my career (laws) and other knowledge to support other girls to achieve their dreams and solve their personal problems.
