SEGA is the Solution: Ashura’s Story

2023 marks the 15th Anniversary of Nurturing Minds and SEGA! One of the ways we are celebrating this important milestone is through a monthly blog series titled “SEGA is the Solution”.

Young girls are most heavily impacted by lack of education, poverty and climate change. A striking body of evidence demonstrates that organizations like Nurturing Minds and SEGA are the solution to break the cycle of poverty, create prosperity and combat climate change. Each month we will be spotlighting one of SEGA’s graduates so you can see the impact that SEGA’s holistic approach to education has had on their lives.

Ashura, SEGA
Class of 2019

“After SEGA, my life changed positively as I kept dreaming big and exercising all that I learned from SEGA. I believe that someday I will achieve all of my dreams. I will not give up until I have so I can pay it forward to my community and the world.”

For Ashura, her dreams are no longer beyond her reach. Through her hard work and determination, Ashura graduated from SEGA in 2019. After SEGA, Ashura became a UNITE Scholar and continued pursuring her dreams by attending A-Levels at Mtwara Tech Secondary School, where she graduated in 2022.

With support from SEGA’s Continuing Education Scholarship Program, Ashura started univer

What are you doing now?

Recently I have been at the University of Dodoma in Tanzania, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Health and Information Sciences as a first-year student.

If it wasn’t for SEGA, would you be where you are right now?

Kindly speaking, if not for SEGA, I couldn't be where I am now since my family could not afford to provide full support for my studies; hence, it's SEGA'S effort has brought me to where I am today. Otherwise, my primary education would have marked the end of my studies.

How did you decide to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Health and Information Sciences? Where did that dream come from?

As I grew up, I dreamed of becoming a doctor who could deal with health matters as I experienced many people around my community suffering from various diseases. After completing my A-Levels last year, I applied for various bachelor programs related to health.

Fortunately, I was admitted to the University of Dodoma pursuing a Bachelor of Science and Health and Information Sciences; since the course is related to health issues, I was happy to be admitted; hence, my education journey began with my dream!

What do you hope to do after graduating from university?

My Education is based on Health and Information Systems; thus, my expectation after completing my studies is to be employed at Health Centers like hospitals, dispensaries, and organizations that deal with health issues. Health Data Management is one of the major activities regarding my Education. Therefore I hope to be employed as a health care administrator, medical record technician, or a health educator.

How was life before SEGA and how is life now?

Before joining SEGA, life was hard for me as I didn't have a nurturing environment for my studies. For instance, to afford basic needs like school uniforms and exercises was a dream. Also, the school was far from home. Thus, I had to spend so much time on my way to school. Most of the time, I used to help my mom with her business to get funds for my school needs; also, before SEGA, I was not competent enough in some skills, like entrepreneurship, communication, and leadership.

After SEGA, my life changed positively as I kept dreaming big and exercising all that I learned from SEGA. Furthermore, apart from academic studies at the University, I engage in other extracurricular activities like participating in health club sessions as a member of the club and other environmental management, like tree planting.

I believe that someday I will achieve my dreams. I will not give up until it's done to pay back to my community and the world.
