SEGA is the Solution: Rebecca’s Story

2023 marks the 15th Anniversary of Nurturing Minds and SEGA! One of the ways we are celebrating this important milestone is through a monthly blog series titled “SEGA is the Solution”.

Young girls are most heavily impacted by lack of education, poverty and climate change. A striking body of evidence demonstrates that organizations like Nurturing Minds and SEGA are the solution to break the cycle of poverty, create prosperity and combat climate change. Each month we will be spotlighting one of SEGA’s graduates so you can see the impact that SEGA’s holistic approach to education has had on their lives.

Rebecca, SEGA
Class of 2019

“SEGA represents a breaking point in my life because I learned skills like entrepreneurship, which now allows me to make money and support my family.”

If it wasn’t for SEGA, would you be where you are right now?

If it wasn't for SEGA, I don't know where I would be because SEGA has been the greatest support in my life. Thanks in part to them, I got Division 2 on my Form 4 exams!

Attending SEGA changed the trajectory of Rebecca's life. She overcame prior hardships to succeed in her studies and scored the second-highest division on her NECTA exams, allowing her to continue to A-levels on the track to University.

What is your education and employment status?

I am at Marian Univeristy in Bagamoyo studying for a bachelor's in education.

How did you decide to pursue a degree in education? Where did that dream come from?

The dream to study education came from the life that I had been living. I didn’t know a lot of things, but I could recognize the hardships I had. When I got the chance to attend SEGA, I did not hesitate. I believed in myself and I made it through all the challenges life gave me. Education is powerful and I want to share that.

After graduting from SEGA, Rebecca enrolled in A-levels at Lugalo Secondary School with support of SEGA's Continuing Education Scholarship Program where she graduated in May of this past year. She is expected to graduate from University in 2025.

How was life before SEGA and how is life now?

My life before SEGA was very challenging. Some days I could not afford to cover basic needs, such as food or clothing. In a way, I’ve always believed that SEGA came to pick me up to make me learn about the world and myself. SEGA represents a breaking point in my life because I learned skills like entrepreneurship, which now allows me to make money and support my family. No one in my family could ever get an education as I did, so I know their eyes are set on me. This makes me feel humbled and challenged because I want to be better.

I can only thank SEGA, Nurturing Minds, and the people who helped me because they changed my life.
